In August 2010, the GB Women were informed that they would be no longer funded by the BVF’s allocation of UK Sport Lottery Funding. Words still cannot describe how difficult that day and the subesquent weeks and months were for all the players and staff involved. The realisation soon hit home in terms of what this meant…no staff, no training facilities, no accommodation, no medical support, no sports science support, no athlete support funding…and that’s just the main things we will no longer have.
The squad, staff and players, took the decision that we would not give up on Our Dream to not only compete at the London 2012 Games but to be a surprise package for the established volleyball nations. We want to be successful and put British Volleyball on the world map whilst back here in GB making sure that women’s volleyball has a future long beyond London 2012.
Now more than ever, we have had to ‘dig’ deep into our individual resources. We have had to accept that we cannot change the decision, no matter how much we cannot comprehend it. The players are across Europe focussing on improving Physically, Mentally, Technically and Tactically to be ready to compete internationally in May 2011. Head Coach Audrey Cooper is working for Volleyball England as CDC Network Manager whilst also continuing her duties as Head Coach, preparing GB for the biggest sporting event in the world.
How can we achieve Our Dream?
We have to be solutions focused. So, over the last 6 months there has been a hive of activity with 2 objectives:
- raising funds to enable a 2011 Summer competitive programme to keep the GBW on track as a team towards L2012. Key to that is ensuring the right number of high level matches against relevant opposition.
- engaging the volleyball community in GBW programme to really leave a legacy beyond 2012.
